Iconic French red that demands cellar ageing
What’s the style?
Bandol is a unique appellation in Southern France. It’s small, but mighty, and in the heart of Provence, known for its pale rosé wines and lavender fields. Though, it’s a different ball game when it comes to Bandol wines. It’s a rugged and low yielding terroir, high in altitude but sun-scorched. This means the Mourvedre here can come to full ripeness, whilst maintaining a glaringly beautiful acidity. Reds from Bandol, of which only a few can compete with Pibarnon in quality, truly stand the test of time, benefitting from extensive bottle ageing. Bandol is incredibly consistent in its vintages, not suffering from excessive rain, hail or dangerous wind that much of France is plagued by.
What’s the story?
Eric de Saint.Victor, second generation winemaker and owner of Pibarnon vows not to make wines of an international style of power and extraction, as pre-1998 Pibarnon tended to be, but instead utilises the same blue clay found at Pétrus and Château d’Yquem to produce exceedingly expressive and elegant wines, standing alone in style in comparison to other wines of Bandol. Pibarnon is situated in an amphitheatre of vines known as the Theatre d'Epidaure (shielding the vines from the catastrophic Mistral wind), and placed well above the other wineries in Bandol, making it one of the most picturesque in the appellation.
